TOM GILLAM: News
SxSW, NEW CD, OTHER STUFF - April 2, 2007
SxSW, NEW CD, OTHER STUFF
I don't write these blogs as often as I should, so when I do actually sit down and put pen to paper (or finger to keyboard.....that's right I said "finger" not "fingers") I usually have a lot to talk about. Now some of you, and I'm not really sure there are many who read this, might say "Tom, why don't you just write one small blog a week, instead of one huge blog every few months or so?". Well folks the answer is simple, there are only so many hours in the day, and what with watching my favorite TV shows (Lost, Scrubs,), surfing the internet for porn, & listening to Mrs. G (my wife) give me a list of things she needs to be done, that I'll probably get to..sometime, well c'mon!! ANYHOOO.....
We played a string of gigs during South By Southwest this year in Austin Texas , and as always we had a blast. Most of the time when we play "industry geared" shows like SxSW, some are good, some are bad, and some are , how shall we say, interesting. I'm happy to report this year EVERY show was a winner!! TG & TP were in full effect rising to each occasion like the mighty "country-rockin' jaggernaut" that we are known to be, and making every musical moment count!! Many thanks to my good friends at "No Depression" magazine, Grant Alden & Peter Blackstock who put us on their show at Habana, Penny Jo Pullus our Austin based "partner in crimes" for her "Dog & Pony" show at Opal Devine, Dave Insley for having us at The Brentwood Tavern (and for not being alarmed when the police showed up) and last but not least Greg Geil for not only his show at the Waterloo Icehouse, but for his continuing support & championing of our endevor! There are MANY interesting storys, not only about SxSW but our stay in New Braunfells (thanks Mattson) and the 28 hour + ride to and from Texas, but alas, you'll have to ask us when you see us or wait for me to make "vailed references" to it in a song, as room and attention spans here in cyber space are limited!!
During SxSW we previewed a couple of new tunes from our brand new, soon to be released CD "Never Look Back" which will be out both here in the US and in Europe by mid summer. You can hear three of the new tracks on the Myspace site of which, the title track, was penned by guitar player extrodonaire and Tracktor Pull member Craig Simon (he good!!). We will be shuffling the tunes periodically so you'll be able to hear a good portion of the LP before it's released, with the hope, of course, that you'll like it enough to buy it when it's released properly!! Also check out the new "Download Cards" that you can purchase not only on the site but also at gigs. The cards will enable you to download 15 tracks of "Gillam" material from all of our releases (even some unreleased live stuff) in any order you like for only $10.99 (what a deal!!).
One final note, March 21st was the one year anniversary of my little "health mishap" (OK it wasn't so little, but indulge me!!) it was also the one year mark of my sobriety. I can't tell you all how happy I am to not only be alive but to be clear headed enough to enjoy it! I spent a lot of years in a haze and now everything seems to be a lot clearer. But remember this: just cause I'm not drinking doesn't mean I'm not having a GREAT time, it just means theres more for you to drink!! :-). As a little momento on the night of the 21st I read all the cards, letters and e-mails that were sent to me an CRIED LIKE A BABY!!
To all of you who cared (and there were more than I had ever imagined) Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, my life is better because of you!! I still got a lot of stuff up my sleeve and hope to reveal it to you all over the next 50 or so years, so stick around, we're just getting to the good part!!!
I LOVE YOU ALL
Cheers

12/5 Nashville, Post European Wrap Up & More!! - December 5, 2006
12/5
Nashville, Post European Wrap Up & More!!
Greetings everyone!! Sorry I haven't posted an update in a while but
it's been a crazy year! Let's see, where did we leave off.....
Sept was fantastic!! Yours truly along with the "Mighty Tractor Pull"
took Nashville by storm (once again) and played, at the request of my
good friend Grant Alden, the "No Depression" kick off party for the
Americana Music Conference. Much fun was had and many new and old
friends were in attendance, including ole Texas buddies Hayes Carll,
Mattson Rainer, and the always entertaining Ray Wylie Hubbard (there
were more but as it was three months ago I seem to have forgotten a
few!!). The details from the post show are fuzzy at best, but I seem to
recall chatting for quite a longtime with the afore mentioned Grant
Alden about much "music trivia" (my passion!) and the pro's and con's
of
early 70's "prog/rock" while Tim, Joe, Dave, & Craig consumed large
amounts of alcoholic beverages and chatted up the ladies.
A week later I was on a plane headed to Germany and spent the month of
Oct. and half of Nov. touring there and the Netherlands with my good
friend singer/songwriter Joseph Parsons & his band. The tour was a
blast! The guys in the band were perfect traveling companions and,
while
not the "Mighty Tractor Pull," they did a great job backing me during
my
portion of the show. All of the concerts, for the most part, were
sell-outs as Joseph is quite popular in that part of the world, and his
fans were really receptive to my style of music. If all goes well, I
will bring Tractor Pull back there in the near future. I must take a
moment to thank Joseph Parsons for being such a gracious host on our
journey thru the "land of assorted meats and cheeses" and for giving me
a great forum to showcase what I do to the "European folk" (thanx
Jay!!). A high point of the tour was getting to know the opening
artist,
Todd Thibaud (pronounced tee-bow), a great singer/songwriter and
kindred
spirit, whose songs stuck in my brain long after the shows were done.
He
was not only a great source of musical knowledge but also a big help
when I experienced one of my few 'bouts of "homesickness" (more on that
later). Todd has also graciously accepted (with great peril to his own
career) my offer to join a "Gilbert O'Sullivan" tribute band. This
outfit will perform ONLY Gilbert O's hits and B sides, and we have
jointly decided that all shows will not only open with, but also close
with, Gilbert's oft times over looked musical gem "Get Down." I'm sure
requests for this band will be flooding the office of both of our
managers very soon!
As I mentioned earlier I did have a few instances where I got a little
"homesick" during the tour, which is quite common for me in Europe as
most of the things I take for granted when touring the U.S. are not
really part of the landscape: hotel rooms that look EXACTLY the same
each night (right down to the pictures on the walls), TV (in English),
magazines (in English), small talk at diners (in English). And to be
honest, my command of the German language is limited to "yes",
"please",
"no", and of course "do you have a bathroom?" The minor occurrences of
the afore mentioned homesickness were relieved by the great crowds each
night and by the daily e-mails I received from home (thanks Grant!!).
In
conclusion I guess we can say that I'm pretty sure Germany loves Tom
Gillam and I, in return, love them as well.
I know I've been rambling quite a bit here, and if you're still
reading,
here are a few things to be on the look out for in the near future: a
new holiday track from TG & TP to be released sometime before Christmas
(for download only), a return to the Grape St in Phila. along with a
couple of road dates with The Bottle Rockets, featuring tons of new
tunes that will be included on my new cd "Never Look Back"(due
spring/summer '07), and a holiday show with my new side project called
U.S. Rails featuring yours truly along with Ben Arnold, Scott Bricklin,
Joseph Parsons & Matt Muir performing songs that we wrote and recorded
for an up coming CD release as well as tunes from all of our solo
careers. I'm sure I'm forgetting something so I'll have to save it for
the next update. Have a great holiday!

Tom Gillam: The Road Back
(Wednesday, 17 May 2006) - Contributed by Eric Banister
We’ve all got dates of significance in our lives. Some dates are happy remembrances – the day we got our drivers license,
that first date with our soul mate. Others carry a heavier weight – the day of our divorce, the death or a loved one. For
Tom Gillam, March 20, 2006 became one of those latter dates. That’s the day he died. “I don't mean to make a joke of it,”
he told Tara Murtha in a recent South Jersey Courier-Post interview, “but I actually did die.”
After playing a grueling schedule at the annual South By Southwest music Conference in Austin, TX – 4 shows in three
days including our own AmericanaRoots.com Showcase – Gillam had arrived home late on March 20 and began to attend
to last minute details for his trip to France, scheduled the next day. There he was to record songs for an album with the
Philadelphia Songwriter collective "4 Way Street" (Ben Arnold, Joseph Parsons, Scott Bricklin). But that evening he
began to feel ill but marked it up to indigestion more than likely brought on by the lifestyle of the road: little sleep, little
exercise, poor diet and a little too much alcohol.

Stricken musician gets a little help from friends
By TARA MURTHA
For the Courier-Post
Gibbsboro-based musician Tom Gillam is known as a big-hearted, megavolt personality with a quick wit who has been delivering swashbuckling, honky-tonk stage performances for more than 20 years.
The man's all spirit, everyone says: talks a mile a minute and gets things done. He even is rumored to be able to corral musicians to gigs on time.
It makes sense that slowing to the pace of his new, decelerated heartbeat is a bit of a challenge. He's on medication that slows his system to help his body absorb the new splint in his heart.
"I'm feeling better than I was a month ago, considering I think yesterday was the one-month anniversary of when I died," Gillam explained before rupturing into his trademark volcanic laughter. "I don't mean to make a joke of it, but I actually did die."
Though details are still fuzzy, doctors told Gillam he flat-lined six to seven times while suffering three consecutive heart attacks on March 20, just hours after stepping off a plane after performing at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas.
Still, it was a good day to have a heart attack, relatively speaking. Gillam was scheduled to fly to France the next morning to record an album with Four Way Street, the powerhouse collective that also features Joseph Parsons, Ben Arnold and Scott Bricklin. Gillam figures his heart would have given out either while he was in the air or at the secluded farm house studio if his wife, Caroline, hadn't urged him to check into the emergency room that night.
He says it was a guy thing. He had dismissed the pain as really bad indigestion.
"I would have been at the farm house, probably drinking way too much alcohol, saying I didn't feel good. They would have told me to sleep it off and I would have probably died," he said. "Life has a way of waking your (rear end) up when it wants to."
The last thing Gillam remembers of that night is lying on a gurney with a doctor standing over him saying something about a heart attack, then turning to his wife and saying "I don't want to die" seconds before losing consciousness.
"All I thought of is, "You've got to be kidding me. This is it? This is all I get? I have so much to do.' That was my last thought," he said. "I've got all these songs I didn't even put down on tape yet."
These days, it looks like Gillam will have the chance to put down those songs, though recording his next solo album and the Four Way Street tracks have been postponed a few months. He also has had to cancel upcoming tour dates.
"There's no such thing as disability insurance for a musician," says Joe Carroll, longtime Gillam friend, collaborator and business partner who organized the upcoming all-star benefit concert that will raise funds toward paying the medical bills.
The concert will be held May 13 at Whiskey Dix, a bar in Philadelphia near the Electric Factory, where Carroll hosts a monthly Roots Rock Revival night and Gillam hosts a weekly open mic.
Carroll plays guitar in Tractor Pull, Gillam's band. Carroll also produced Gillam's last three solo albums, including 2001's critically acclaimed Dallas and 2004's Shake My Hand, which earned Gillam a nomination from the Americana Music Association.
Gillam and Carroll, both in their 40s, say they've been working and playing together since way back when they were just a couple of guys without anything better to do on a Friday night in Jersey.
After spending the first couple of days in a bedside vigil, Carroll began to read Gillam the hundreds of e-mails of support and concern that poured in from all over, including Europe, where Gillam toured with Joe Parsons last fall.
"I broke down and cried a lot. It was a moving thing to know so many people cared about me. When I think about it I still get choked up," Gillam says. "I didn't even realize that many people knew who I was."
The e-mail and MySpace messages were just the first clue to how much the music community was affected by the news.
Once Carroll sent out word he was looking for acts to play the benefit concert, most of the lineup was booked within a day. He even had to turn away about 40 acts.
"I was basically saying I appreciate it, but, unfortunately, I'm booked up. Everyone's been really cool about it. I tried to do it so I can get the most people on the show," Carroll explained.
The final roster is a diverse lineup that reflects the breadth of Gillam's career. Gillam started out playing hard-edged, boozy blues rock 'n' roll in his early days at long-since-closed hair band clubs such as The Galaxy in Somerdale and the Empire Rock Club in Northeast Philadelphia. Back then, he was known to fans as Tom Tunes and performed in the bands Radio Rodeo and Gypsy Rose.
Gillam and Tractor Pull are more known for a rabble-rousing, floorboard-stomping style of music. There also will be some quieter moments at the songwriter circle scheduled for later in the evening.
For Philadelphia-based Kate Gaffney, sitting in on the songwriter circle is the only way she can make it to the show after playing the Camp Jam in the Pines earlier that day. She's one of several artists who are double-gigging to show their support.

GILLAM HEALTH UPDATE #2 - March 27, 2006
Just wanted to update everyone on the condition of Tom Gillam. After suffering 3 heart attacks early Tuesday morning, he is taking a turn in the direction of a full recovery. He is expected to be discharged early this week. He will return home and begin a very slow rehabilitation process. At this point his doctors feel there is minimal to no permanent damage. When I visited Tom last night he wanted me to let everyone know he is surprisingly overcome with the outpouring of support from friends and colleagues. The amount of phone calls, emails, flowers and cards were unbelievable. ( I printed out each and every email sent to
www.tomgillam.com as well as emails and comments left on his myspace page. I then delivered them to him daily in the hospital. He was very overcome with emotion when reading all of your get well messages). Tom promises to reply to each and every email over the next few weeks. Tom says "THANKS AND I LOVE YOU ALL"

GILLAM SUFFERS HEART ATTACK - March 22, 2006
This would usually be the time I would tell everyone about the great time we had at SXSW (South By South West) and how many great shows we played and how many great people we met. However,as many of you are aware, Tom Gillam suffered a massive heart attack around 1am on Tuesday morning. He is in critical condition at a hospital in New Jersey. He is under very good care at a cardiac care unit. His wife, family and friends are by his side. He has shown significant improvement in 1 day. He has been removed from the ventilator and is breathing on his own. He was able to sit-up today and have minimal conversation. His spirit is very good. he has the staff at the hospital laughing with his anectdotes and of course he is quizzing them on their astrological signs. He is expected to have a full recovery.
We would like to thank everyone who is emailing and calling. The support has been overwhelming. I apologize if I can't respond to each email and phone call in a timely matter. I thought it would be good to use the website and a bulk emailer to keep everyone updated on his progress.
